How Shackmaster Power 600 protected the VU4AX DXpedition from disaster

We were delighted to get great news from an inspiring presentation that was held on September 24, 2025 by Marcel, PA9M, one of the team members of the VU4AX DXpedition (March 2025).
Among the many exciting moments of his story, a key highlight was the role of our Shackmaster Power 600 — the power supply that prevented serious damage to the team’s equipment.
Before the expedition, we provided three Shackmaster Power 600 units to support the VU4AX team. These units were used to power amplifiers and transceivers during the operation and quickly proved their reliability under extreme conditions. Operating from one of the most remote islands in the Indian Ocean, the VU4AX team ran six stations non-stop under intense heat and humidity — a real challenge for both the operators and their equipment.
During the VU4AX operation, the team’s main generator delivered a stable 232 V, ensuring smooth performance. However, once a day the generator had to be turned off for an hour, and a smaller backup generator was used instead.
That’s when trouble began — the backup generator’s output fluctuated dangerously between 65 V and 265 V. Thanks to the Shackmaster’s precise monitoring, the operators immediately detected the voltage spikes and shut down all amplifiers and transceivers in time, saving the equipment from potential failure.
The faulty generator was turned off and never used again. Once again, Shackmaster Power 600 proved its value — a reliable safeguard for radio gear in the most demanding field conditions.
Imagine you’re on a remote DXpedition, far from the city lights and the reliable grid. You’ve got your stations running, antennas tuned, and radios humming… and then the power wobbles.
But that’s not the only danger out in the field:
- In remote or rural areas, grid instability can cause sudden spikes or brownouts.
- When multiple high-power amplifiers fire up at once, voltage drops under peak load, risking gear damage.
- Solar panels or batteries can fluctuate based on sunlight and charge, leaving operators guessing about real voltage.
- Long extension cables for field setups can create unexpected voltage drops at the device end.
- Generators during startup or shutdown produce unpredictable surges.
- And if a lightning storm passes nearby, voltage spikes and surges can appear in a flash.
- Even sharing circuits with motors or pumps can send your carefully tuned radios into chaos.
Every one of these situations can ruin expensive, delicate equipment — unless you have a safeguard.
That’s why the Shackmaster Power 600 is more than a power supply. It monitors voltage and current in real time, alerts you instantly to dangerous swings, and protects your gear. On VU4AX, it wasn’t just a tool — it was a lifesaver, ensuring the radios stayed safe while the operators stayed focused on what mattered: making contacts, logging QSOs, and enjoying the DXpedition adventure.
